station. Many thanks to these Departments on behalf of the
Hauppauge Chiefs Office. No one was injured, but the house
sustained serious structural damage, especially to the first
floor flooring structure over the basement. The cause of
this fire was investigated by the Suffolk County Arson Squad.
Their preliminary finding was the fire was accidental most
likely to have been caused by an electrical fault caused
by the exterior construction work. All units were back in
service as of 1500 hrs.

The Hauppauge Fire Department
was alerted for a report of a fire in a building involving
Hazardous Materials at a plant that makes commercial mixing
machines. Engine 3-8-14, Heavy Rescue 3-8-9 responded and
operated under the command of Chief of Department Michael
Gagliardi. Units found that a commercial mixing machine being
used to a mix a proprietary mixture of chemicals as a demonstration
had gone completely awry. This mixture of Chemicals which
included chemicals both dangerous when wet and a flammable
solid was being mixed in the machine when the brew caught
fire. Building personnel present attempted to extinguish
the fire but were only partly successful (did not use suitable
extinguishing agent). After surveying the site and consulting
with both representatives of the Smithtown Fire Marshals
Office and the provided Material Safety Data Sheets for the
commodities involved Chief Gagliardi decided to have this
piece of equipment moved to the outside to effect final extinguishment.
This was accomplished by members in full turnout gear and
breathing apparatus as their was a slight chance of a sudden
flash fire and or toxic gases being emitted. Class D Fire
Extinguishing agent was used as the source of the fire was
believed to be the flammable solids (combustible metals)
in the mixture. Their were no injuries and damage was limited
to the mixer. Smithtown Fire Marshals and Hauppauge Fire
Officials advised company representatives to have materials
properly disposed of. All Fire Department equipment was back in service as of 1141 hrs. |
