The Hauppauge Fire Department was dispatched to an automatic alarm of fire at a large commercial building on Wireless Boulevard. The arriving Chief Officer and suppression personnel made immediate entry and found an extremely heavy smoke condition inside the manufacturing/warehouse area of this 100,000 Square foot building. Locating the fire was extremely difficult due to the heavy smoke condition and the complexity of the interior of this building. Once the point of origin was located and it was determined that the buildings fire sprinkler system had not only contained the fire but completely extinguished it, the sprinkler system was promptly shut down and ventilation begun. This proved to be extremely difficult due to the size and ceiling height of the building and an insufficient number of large exterior openings. There was also no power to the building as a command decision was made early on in the operation to terminate power to this premises due to the large amount of high voltage electrical equipment within. Therefore all roof top HVAC units and other mechanical ventilation fans would not operate. Many thanks to the Commack Fire Department who responded initially as a fast team and later assisted with the ventilation process and also thanks to the Smithtown Fire Department for sending equipment to cover the Hauppauge Fire District while this operation was in progress. The fire which was relatively minor (thanks to the fire sprinklers) involved equipment on and near a worktable where some type of electrical testing was in progress. This fire was investigated by representatives of the Hauppauge Fire Department and Fire Marshals from the Town of Smithtown Public Safety Department. While the exact cause is still under investigation the fire was deemed accidental. The building sustained no structural damage and fire damage was limited to the area of origin. There was however some moderate to light smoke damage throughout the entire premises. Units operating at this scene were Engines 3-8-3, 3-8-14, 3-8-11, 3-8-3, 3-8-4, Ladder Tower 3-8-7 and Heavy Rescue 3-8-9 under the command of Chiefs Woods and Kriklava. All Hauppauge Apparatus and personnel were back in service as of 0037 hrs Tuesday morning however the preliminary fire investigation by the fire marshals continued until approximately 0200 hrs.
