This photo is believed to be of Daniel Hahn and Charles Simonson seated in the Reo Fire Apparatus that had been obtained used from the Smithtown Fire Department. Both of these Firefighters and the Reo apparatus served with the Department well into the 1950's. This photo is believed to have been taken in 1939.

old_firehouse.jpg

The first Hauppauge Fire District Firehouse constructed in 1939. Even though it was only two bays they managed to squeeze three vehicles inside. It was used to store the Studebaker, the American Lafrance and the Reo, and later the 1949 Oren. Note: The flag pole. It is very similar if not the same one that stands outside the present main firehouse. It is also possible it is very close to if not the same location as where the current flag pole is. The crossarm on the pole that is currently standing was added in the 1980's. It sure looks like the same pole to me.

The firefighters standing directly behind the banner is Charles Simonson. The banner they are carrying was until recently on display at the Firefighting Museum, Hudson, New York but was recently withdrawn from Public viewing due to its deteriorating condition.

1924_AMERICAN_LAFRANCE_195X.jpg (178 kb)

1924 American LaFrance (3-8-1) picture was taken in the early 1950's in front of Hauppauge’s original firehouse. The apparatus in the background is the 1949 Oren (3-8-4).

The 1924 American LaFrance (3-8-1) was purchased used from a Nassau department (Rockville Center?) In the late thirties by the department with ownership later transferred over to the fire district. This vehicle was later decommissioned in the mid 1950's and is now in the hands of a private collector.

The 1949 Oren was the first new fire apparatus purchased by the district for the department and saw service until approximately 1974. It was unfortunately given away and later scrapped.

The firehouse in the background is the original two bay firehouse constructed by the district in 1939 and it served the district in that form until 1954-55 when it was incorporated into a new firehouse. (It became the meeting room/radio room area) with four bays. The original two bay firehouse was located approximately, where the southwest driveway is between the present firehouse and the bank. When the current building was constructed, (1968-69) the meeting room/radio room area was demolished and all that remains of the fifties firehouse is the four bays where the engines are currently parked.

INSPECTION 4 24 64.jpg (91820 bytes)

Department Inspection - 4/24/64

Hauppauge firefighters applying water at the scene of a major shopping center fire 1961. Two firefighters readily identified in picture are then Assistant Chief Howard Schreck (white helmet and turnout coat) and Walter Kortright operating the Nozzle. This shopping center located across the street from where the fire department was located was heavily involved in fire at the time of the alarm. This and the lack of a readily available water supply with the only available hydrant being at the pump station at Wheeler Road and Veterans Highway led to the total destruction of this shopping center.

Hauppauge firefighters advancing a hose line to a burning drug store. One of a number of stores that were destroyed in this shopping center fire which took place in 1961

Hauppauge and Smithtown Firefighters overhauling the remains of the shopping center that was opposite hq on Wheeler Road 02/20/61. This fire destroyed the Hauppauge Post Office Branch, a drug store, luncheonette, a branch of the Bank of Smithtown, a liquor store and a hardware store. This shopping center faced east and this photo was taken from the Townline Road Side. The building in the background on the left on the other side of Wheeler Road is the meeting room/office area of the Hauppauge Fire Department. That portion of the building sat in what now is the driveway between the existing firehouse and the property that belongs to the bank.

The Hauppauge Fire Department as it appeared in 1961. This building was constructed in the mid 1950's and replaced the old wooden two bay firehouse constructed in 1939.This is an extremely rare photo as it is one of the only photos to show almost the complete building at that time. The four garage bays still exist as the engine bays on the south side of the existing firehouse. The portion of the building on the right with the large bay window and the cupola was the original two bay firehouse which was converted into the meeting room/radio room/administrative offices area. It was razed when the existing firehouse was constructed in 1969-1970. (Many thanks to Ken Furuno for using is expertise to modify this photograph into a usable format.)

Pictured are two 1964 Hahn/Autocar 1000 GPM Pumpers that protected Hauppauge from 1964 to 1981. Pictured are 3-8-7 in the foreground a two stage pumper and in the background 3-8-8 a single stage pumper. The Engines were basically identical other wise with the exception of two booster reels on 3-8-7 and the lack of a Deluge set on 3-8-7. A deluge set was added later to 3-8-7 as was Mattydale preconnects (crosslays) to both Engines. Both of these Engines were later repainted white sometime in 1965-66.

Car into FireHouse - 1965

Supposedly this vehicle struck one of the telephone poles in front of the firehouse and then ended up backwards in the old firehouses meeting room. I don't know about injuries to the vehicle occupants if there were any and no one was at the firehouse when the incident happened. Note the first chiefs car in the background and you can just make out the post office parking lot beyond that and then way in the distance Robert Halls (shopping center) at Wheeler Road (Route 111) and Townline Road

These photos show the Hauppauge Fire Department with much appreciated assistance from the Smithtown Fire Department working to control and extinguish this 8000 gallon gasoline truck that overturned at the intersection of Wheeler Road and Kings Highway. The driver was killed and burned beyond all recognition. The Department was on the scene well into the early morning hours from this incident that began around 7Pm. Note the Gasoline Burning in the vacant lot used as a parking area for Hirsch Fuels, That's Engine 3-8-4, 1972 Imperial with the late Henry(Hank)Rotzman leaning with one arm on the vehicle checking out the action (yea he was the pump operator but cut him some slack). In the last picture note the (primitive) foam operation by some peoples standards involving in-line foam eductors and five gallon pails. It may have been primitive but it worked.

10-1995_Amercian_Tissue_Fire.jpg

The largest Structural fire to date that the Hauppauge Fire Department has dealt with was the fire at the American Tissue Paper Packaging plant at # 50 Cabot Court on November 16th and 17th 1995. The alarm was sounded at 1352 hrs on a weekday and ultimately resulted the participation of men and equipment from over fifty other fire departments. The 150,000 Square foot building which contained a huge fire load of paper was totally destroyed. According to the Suffolk County Water Authority at the time, the over nine million gallons of water used to suppress this fire was the largest fire flow ever in Suffolk County up to that time. The apparatus in this photo is 3-8-4 (1991 Pierce) which was first due.
